Definitions
| #4 Finish: | |
| A standard grain finish that ranges between a 120 and 150 grit finish, also known as a satin or brushed finish. | |
| Backsplash: | |
| The vertical portion at the rear of a counter-top, normally 4-6″ that protects the adjacent wall surface. Back splashes on metal counter-tops are formed from the original sheet, making them integral to the counter-top. | |
| Cove corner: | |
| A formed radiused bend on a sink or backsplash. For sanitary purposes and ease in maintenance, sinks have both vertical and horizontal intersecting cove corners. Artisan’s standard sinks are manufactured with ¾” cove corners. | |
| Cut-out: | |
| A hole or shape removed from the counter-top to accommodate for a drop-in item. | |
| Drain board: | |
| An integral portion of a counter-top or dish table adjacent to a sink. Artisan does provide several integral drainage options our custom sinks, stand-alone sinks and dish tables. | |
| Edge: | |
| The exposed portion of a counter-top that may be formed into a profile or left flat and “raw” to be covered or trimmed with other material such as tile or wood. | |
| Edge Return : | |
| The portion of material returned towards the cabinet (generally ½”) to produce a slight radius at the bottom of an edge profile. | |
| Finish: | |
| The actual grit, polish, or blend of a metal sheet. | |
| Gauge: | |
| The standard used by ASTM to determine metal thickness. Our counter-tops and sinks are 16 or 14 gauge for residential and 14 or 12 gauge for commercial applications. | |
| Grain: | |
| A directional brush finish produced by varying degrees of grit finishing. | |
| Integral: | |
| Formed or welded, ground, and polished as one piece. i.e. Artisan’s custom sinks are integrally welded, ground and polished into our counter-tops. | |
| Integral Backsplash : | |
| Material formed out of the same sheet material as the counter-top to create a back-splash at various heights and profiles. | |
| Integral Sink : | |
| A fabricated stainless steel sink that is welded to the counter-top and then ground and polished to match the counter-top finish. | |
| Joint: | |
| The area where two surfaces meet, whether welded, or butted together. | |
| Random Finish : | |
| A custom hand finish using various grinding disks, cones, and finishing pads which are applied in a random fashion to obtain a modern or contemporary look. | |
| Satin Finish : | |
| A brushed directional finish, usually rated as a #4 finish. | |

| Sink cutout : | |
| A cut out in the counter-top to accommodate for a drop-in sink. | |
| Stamped metal: | |
| A manufacturing process that presses or forms a counter-top or sink in one single hit. This process stretches the base material as it forms over the die, making the stretched area thinner and more susceptible to punctures, dents, and cracks.
Note: All of Artisan’s counter-tops and sinks are fabricated, not stamped, maintaining the base material thickness throughout the product. |
